There are 44 countries in Europe, divided up into four regions; Western Europe, Northern Europe, Eastern Europe and Southern Europe.
You may be surprised to know that Europe is actually the second smallest continent in the world after Australia. Europe has a landmass that covers 6.8% of the world, clocking in at 10.18 million kilometers squared.
In terms of pure landmass, Europe is ever so slightly smaller than the USA, covering just 0.4 million square miles more. That means that all the states of the US would be able to fit within the continent.
Many people think that Russia is the largest country in Europe. While it is true that Russia is the largest country in the world, it actually spans across two continents, with its landmass shared by both Europe and Asia. This means that the biggest country in Europe, where the landmass is located entirely on the one continent, is Ukraine, with France clocking in in second place.
If you are wandering the stunning streets of Rome, you may not even notice when you stumble into an entirely new country. Vatican City, located within the city of Rome, is a country in its own right, and home to the famous Sistine Chapel. Vatican City covers 0.44 kilometers squared, so it is seriously tiny! The second smallest country in Europe is Monaco, covering a grand total of 1.95 kilometers squared.
Tipping standards vary from country to country. In some European destinations, tipping is sometimes included on the bill as standard, whereas in other locations, a 5-10% tip is normally customary and welcomed.
Absolutely! Snow is not an uncommon sight in Europe, most especially in the winter. Some countries, such as Norway and Sweden, can have snow all year round to their north extremities. Otherwise, countries throughout Europe such as Austria, Poland and Germany, will typically see snowfall in the winter months. In Southern countries, such as Italy, snowfall is typically rare.
In terms of official languages, there are 24 used in Europe, with the most prevalent being English, then German, and then followed by French. However there are an estimated two hundred plus languages spoken in total between different communities and nationalities within the continent.

The best time to visit Europe
This is quite a difficult question to answer definitively, because Europe is such a large and varied continent, which is fabulous in every season. It really depends on what you want. If you are hankering after a beach break with wall-to-wall sunshine and the chance to swim in the Mediterranean Sea, then summer is the best time to visit Europe across the south of the continent. Greece, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Croatia are top choices for summer beach breaks - although it's best to avoid August, as this is the height of the peak season and many beach destinations are very crowded during this time.
On the other hand, ski vacations are popular and wonderful in Europe, and, of course, you want a good covering of snow for this. December through February generally sees good amounts of snowfall across high Alpine regions such as northern Italy, Switzerland and France. You will also experience beautiful snow in the Scandinavian countries such as Norway and Sweden, and even further north in Iceland.
For those of you looking for a city break, Europe offers countless options, from ancient destinations like Rome and Athens to chic modern places. The best time to visit Europe for a city break is during the shoulder seasons of spring and fall, when crowd levels are lower and the weather is generally mild and pleasent, without the high heat of summer or the intense cold of winter.

Food and drink in Europe
With cuisines as varied as the countries themselves, food in Europe is an adventure for your tastebuds. With wholesome and hearty meals found in the north of the continent, such as thick stews and roasted meats in the UK, to the rich and savory delicacies of France, to lighter meals across the Mediterranean, you'll find something to tickle your tastebuds in Europe. There are simply too many iconic dishes to list here, but some of the must-try dishes in Europe include: pizza and pasta in Italy, paella in Spain, pastel de nata in Portugal, and gyros and Greek salad in Greece.
There are many, many options for flights from the USA and Canada to Europe. For the majority of countries, you'll fly into the airport in the capital city, although some particularly popular countries will have large international airports close to tourist destinations too.
International airports in Europe which take non-stop flights from over the Atlantic include:
London Heathrow London Gatwick Paris Charles de Gaulle Rome Fiumicino Amsterdam Schiphol Madrid Athens
Driving in Europe is generally pretty simple. Motorways and autobahns are great ways to cover long distances on well-maintained roads, and intercity driving is straight forward and comfortable. If you're planning on visiting small towns in the countryside, it is often essential to have a car as public transport to some places in very limited. On the other hand, driving in large European cities is not for the faint of heart, as they are busy and iften rather chaotic on the roads. You might also find it tricky to park, and there are sections in many cities that are closed off to vehicles. So if you're on a city break and not planning on venturing far, we suggest skipping the car and sticking to public transport.
The rail network in Europe is fantastic. From sleek international trains to small regional routes, you can easily get on and off the rails and will be able to find your way to most places of interest. Trains in Europe are very safe (although as with all cities and places with lots of people, it's wise to look out for your belongings and keep valuables hidden), and a convenient way to cover long distances in comfort. There are also a few very famous train journies in Europe, including the Orient Express, the Bernin Express, and the Al-Andalus, which are routes across beautiful ladnscapes in often vintage carriages.
A great many of Europe's cities are very walkable, particularly in the touristic centers. Many European destinations are much smaller than their North American counterparts, and can be easily explored by foot - which is one of our favorites methods for getting about. You never knwo what hidden treasures, beautiful little alleys or secret cafes you'll discover!
Many European cities have a decent tram network, providing a quick and easy method for getting around. Many Italian cities have trams, as well as regions in Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, and Scandinavia.
City metros or underground trains are a major way of getting about in European cities. Many destinations, such as London, have inricate networks of underground rails that carry people all over the city. It is a cheap way to get around, and a great option for when the weather is bad.
